Foreign Language Exams

- Erasmus Language Exam is conducted once a year at our university. It is valid for 3 years.

Students can apply for the Erasmus program using the results of the English Proficiency Exam organized by our university, or the results of internationally recognized exams such  as TOEFL.

Academic staff can apply with TOEFL or language exams recognized by YÖK.

In addition, there are countries where education is provided in their native languages. Candidates applying to these countries must submit the language certificates accepted by the respective institution. We recommend that you research the language exam requirements and the types of exams accepted by the country you plan to apply to in advance.

Online Linguistic Support (OLS) - Scope of Online Language Support:

The European Commission offers the Online Linguistic Support system for students who take part in student mobility activities in higher education.

In 2014, this support is offered to students in German, French, Dutch, Italian, English and Spanish. Only those students who will carry out their activities abroad in these languages can use this system. However, online language support is not available for students whose native language is the language in which they will carry out the activity.

Online language support includes exams that students are required to take and optional online language courses.

(A) Mandatory Exams

Students eligible for learning or traineeship mobility are tested in the language in which the activity is carried out through the Online Language Support system, both prior to the beginning of the mobility and after the completion of the mobility.

The exams do not affect the students' selection status. The exams conducted before and after the activity are intended to observe changes in students' language proficiency during the activity. These exams are mandatory only if required by the host institution.

Exam results can only be viewed by the student and the home institution.

(B) Optional Language Courses:

After taking the language test prior to the beginning of their activities, students may voluntarily attend online language courses if they find themselves inadequate according to the results of the test or on the recommendation of their higher education institution.

The language of the exam must be the same as the language of the course.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE EXAM EQUIVALENCIES

Considering the reports of the Foreign Language Exam Equivalency Commission and the evaluations of the Foreign Language Examinations Department, the ÖSYM (Assessment, Selection and Placement Center) Board of Directors has taken the following decisions regarding the equivalencies of Foreign Language Exams:

KPDS-ÜDS-YDS Equivalence

The Civil Servant Foreign Language Proficiency Test (KPDS)

Interuniversity Foreign Language Examination (ÜDS)

Foreign Language Proficiency Level Assessment Examination (YDS) conducted by ÖSYM are equivalent with one another.

KPDS-ÜDS-YDS Equivalence of International Foreign Language Exams

In recognizing any international foreign language exam as equivalent to KPDS, ÜDS, or YDS, it has first been decided that the exam must have international validity and that equivalency will only be granted if the exam is administered by an institution that conducts such exams solely in the official language(s) of its own country. For foreign language exams whose equivalency has been recognized, if no validity date is indicated on the result document, it has been decided that foreign language certificates obtained in September 2005 or thereafter shall be considered valid. Pursuant to Article 6, Paragraph 3(d) of the Directive on Determining the Equivalencies of Foreign Language Exams, in granting and maintaining equivalency for an international foreign language exam, if the exam is conducted in Turkey, it must be administered in the buildings of state universities. The foreign language exams accepted in the equivalency table are recognized as equivalent to KPDS, ÜDS, or YDS on a one-way basis. Placement tests organized by universities, institutes, or other language teaching institutions for various courses, other than the exams listed in the tables, cannot be evaluated within the framework of this equivalency table.
